Fireman William F. Olvaney, Jr., badge #295, was appointed on 9/1/1943 to Engine 6. On 6/8/1970, he transferred as D/C 1′s Aide. On 7/18/1972, at Station 4462, 16th Ave & 19th street he was working at a supermarket fire. Fireman Olvaney was sent up to the roof to get other companies off due to an imminent collapse of the roof. He successfully got other units off and as he was coming down the ground ladder the roof collapsed causing him to fall off the ladder. He was treated for his injuries, went home the next day on 7/19/1972 and he had a heart attack. He was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later. He was 57 years old at the time of his death.
