Fireman Charles Mackey, badge #365 was appointed to The Newark Fire Department on 2/21/1906 and assigned on 3/1/1906 as an original member of Engine 21. On 9/23/1913, he transferred to Truck 9. On 7/2/1936, he was working in the fire house of Truck 9 when a group of children led by his daughter ran to him with a complaint of public indecency by a 19 year old man. F/M Mackey rushed outside, came upon the youth, and an argument ensued. The young man hit F/M Mackey and he fell to the ground striking his head on the sidewalk. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. On 7/8/1936, he died from a fractured skull. He was 59 years old at the time of his death.
